Googli Goo was created as part of the GameMaker’s ToolKit Game Jam with a team from Game Create Repeat. I created the level and implementing all art into the game, as well as organizing and tasking the programmers with features planned by the team.

Level Design Process

I like to start off my level design process by coming up with a theme for the level that I am creating. The team decided to make the theme centered around a child’s school room. Once we decided on that, I took my focus to finding multiple reference images to imagine what a space like that would be like. The main focus was from the Toy Story 3 school room. I took the details from that, as well as several other real-life school rooms and incorporated them into a top-down drawing of what the play space would look like.

Once done with the rough sketch, I proceeded to start blocking the level out in Unity. Would wanted the area to be bigger than the player, which I took into consideration when blocking the level out. This took me several hours to complete but it turned into a nice area where we could see the possibilities of play.

The night before the Game Jam deadline, I spent most of my time implementing all the art assets and adjusting the level as necessary to fit within the theme and include the art assets. The level as a whole turned out pretty well, but we ran out of time with trying to solve issues and place interactable objects throughout the scene. This led to different features being cut last minute and not being able to implement everything that we wanted to get done. As a whole, I am proud of the team and what we were able to accomplish in 48 hours.
